What is Senator Martwick’s Youth Legislative Fellowship

Senator Martwick’s Youth Fellowship is a chance for 10 high school students to actively get involved in the legislative process. In the fall semester, students will work with each other, senate staff, lobbyists, outside interest groups, and Senator Martwick identify, support and advance a bill in the Illinois General Assembly. Along the way, students will meet with elected officials representing every level of government to learn more about how to be an effective source of change in their communities. Throughout the fall and spring semesters, students will also participate as a delegation in the YMCA Youth in Government Program. This will include participation in mock legislative sessions as well as two overnight trips to the Capitol Campus in Springfield, Illinois.

Fellowship Format

Senator Martwick’s Youth Fellowship will meet twice a month outside of school hours, from September to May, in addition to scheduled YMCA Youth in Government Meetings. (Students can expect to meet 3 times a month in total) Due to higher than expected interest in our previous edition of the program and the increased scope of our current edition, the fellowship will only be accepting 10 high school students from 11th and 12th grade. Students will submit an application and participate in a brief interview with our staff as part of the application process. Additionally, students must reside or attend school in the 10th Senate District.
