Martwick statement on potential military deployment to Chicago

CHICAGO — State Senator Robert Martwick has released the following statement in response to reports that the federal administration is planning potential National Guard or active-duty military deployment to Chicago:

“Military deployment to the city of Chicago is a clear example of unconstitutional federal overreach. Military intervention is not needed — let alone military intervention the city did not ask for.

“According to the most recent year-to-date statistics, Chicago has seen a significant reduction in overall crime. The number of robberies and homicides have decreased more than 30%, the number of shootings is down by over 35% and vehicular hijackings by more than 50%.

“Democrats in the General Assembly invested in crime prevention, mental health, educational opportunities and after school problems to help prevent crime.  We invested in technology to help police solve crimes.  The proof is in the numbers. If the federal administration wants to help improve our success even more, he shouldn’t send in the National Guard.  Instead he should join us by doing what works, and investing in our communities by releasing federal funds for education, health care and anti-violence grants.”
